We are a congregation of the national Church of Scotland which is Reformed theologically and has a Presbyterian government.
The congregation started off life on the 6 September 1885 meeting in Downfield Public Hall and at that time they belonged to a Presbyterian denomination called the United Presbyterian Church (a Free Church breakaway from the established Kirk). Five years later on 26 September 1889 the present church building was opened and was called "Downfield UP Church". At this time Downfield was still a village on the outskirts of Dundee and yet it had three Presbyterian Churches! In 1929 Downfield UP Church, along with the majority of its sister congregations, rejoined the Church of Scotland and the building came under the care of the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland. The congregation operates a model constitution and thus is governed by a Kirk Session, made up of ordained lay people from the congregation (Elders) who oversee the spiritual welfare of the congregation and parish and the Congregational Board which consists of congregational members whose expertise is required for the material running of the Church. The Minister is Moderator of both groups. Currently there are 36 Elders and 20 Board Members who give freely of their time and skill to the great benefit of the congregation and parish. As a self-supporting church with no links or unions this committted congregation is friendly, welcoming and hard working. They believe wholeheartedly that Downfield South Church provides a positive influence in all their lives and they want to share this with young and old throughout the wider community. |
Our worship reflects our broad theological history and we are blessed with an attached Reader who shares in leading worship alongside the Minister. We are fortunate to have an excellent Musical Director who leads a Senior and Junior Choir which provide a variety of musical performances throughout the year, including our yearly Pantomine in January. Please be aware there is full access to the church for people with mobility issues.
